Biology and Secondary Education

Welcome!

We are pleased that you are considering secondary biology education as a career. We are confident you will find science teaching stimulating and rewarding. It will give you the chance to put your knowledge and interests to use as you develop the minds of future generations.

Science teachers are in short supply at this time, and you will find potential employers eager to recruit and retain you. We want you to succeed in your teaching and will make every effort to ensure that you are well-prepared to teach in today's schools. Congratulations for choosing to teach science and welcome to our department.

Program description

The B.A. biology program at CSU provides teachers with a solid knowledge base emphasizing contemporary theory and research. Students also participate in field experiences in settings that reflect diverse populations of adolescents.

Career opportunities

The B.A. in biology leads to entry-level certification to teach biology in grades 7-12. A minimal amount of additional coursework will lead to certification that will allow you to teach at any middle school grade (4-8).  Certification is at the T4 level (Georgia).

Admission requirements

Admission into the Teacher Education Program.  Applications can be obtained in the College of Education's Office of Services & Field Experiences in Jordan Hall 107 or call 706-568-2191 or 706-568-2194.

Certification requirements

To be eligible for recommendation by CSU for a Georgia professional teaching certificate, students must complete a rigorous program of coursework. They also must meet certain other criteria required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.  Please contact the COE Office of Services and Field Experiences for an application at 706-568-2191 or 706-568-2194.
