A four-course sequence makes up the program (10 semester hours). The courses are based on the New International Reading Standards, the National Reading Panel’s Report, and the work of reading educators from thirteen major universities in the state of Georgia. The following descriptions of the Graduate Reading Endorsement Program are taken from the 2004-2005 catalog. EDRG 6148. Psychology of Reading:
Understanding Readers and the Reading Process (3-0-3) Explores
the psychological foundations of reading as a communication system
and reading as a learned behavior. This course includes a study of
the effects of the mental and physical aspects of learning to read -
the maturation process. EDRG 6116. Integrating Literacy Strategies
in the Middle Grades (3-0-3) An examination of the reading and
writing connection and several models of reading with implications
for the design, development, and evaluation of appropriate
instructional practices at the middle grades and secondary
educational level. Upon completion of the three courses and seminar a student will have acquired 10 graduate hours, A Reading Endorsement, and most importantly, a working knowledge of teaching reading. Note: Students must make at least a GPA of 3.0 in each of the reading endorsement courses. This program requires that the individual have a current teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education, Middle Grades, Secondary Education, or Special Education.
