Secondary English Language Arts
Program description
The M.Ed. program in English Language Arts Education at Columbus State University provides
advanced professional and pedagogical studies that develop expertise in the knowledge, skills
and habits of accomplished teachers. In the M.Ed. program the professional core is reduced
from three to two courses; this affords greater focus on curriculum and methods for
adolescent literacy.
The Education specialist candidates develop
content and pedagogical expertise as well as seek to influence educational decisions outside
their own classrooms. They become increasingly accomplished teachers who display leadership.
They present their leadership project as a publishable manuscript, a conference paper, or at
the Teacher Education Symposium.
Career opportunities
Completion of the M.Ed. program leads to Georgia certification at the T-5 level in the field
when one is also eligible for Level 4 certification in secondary English language arts.
Because there is a shortage of qualified teachers in this teaching field, many students in
the program are eligible for incentive funds (to cover tuition and books) through
HOPE/Promise.
The master's degree also earns classroom teachers a salary increase regardless of their
specific teaching roles, whether in middle grades, early childhood, or library/media
specialist. For this reason, the program attracts graduate students from other teaching
specialties who are considering moving from a field such as middle grades to secondary
education or who are interested in advanced studies of English content and pedagogy.
Completion of the Ed.S. program leads to certification at the T-6 level in
the field when one already holds Level 5 certification in secondary English
language arts. Because there is a shortage of qualified teachers in
this teaching field, many students in the program are eligible for incentive
funds (to cover tuition and books) through HOPE/Promise.
The specialist degree also earns classroom teachers a salary increase
regardless of their specific teaching role, whether in middle grades,
library/media specialist, or another teaching field. For this reason,
the program attracts graduate students from other
teaching specialties who are interested in advanced studies of English
content and pedagogy.
Faculty
Dr. James Brewbaker is program coordinator. Content faculty are members of the
