Special Education Gifted Endorsement Program Requirements

The Gifted Endorsement program of study is made up of different combinations of the following courses.
 

Core Courses


An advisor may exempt students in the Gifted Education Endorsement Program from the following course work if the student provides transcript evidence from an NCATE accredited institution that attest to their recent completion of courses with reasonably similar content.
 

SPED 3215

Assessment of Exceptional Children and Youth (3 Hrs) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. A study of instruments used by classroom teachers in evaluating children with special needs. Practical experiences provided.  An approved subsitute. AND
 

SPED 5205

Learning and Behavioral Characteristics of Children with Disabilities, Gifts and Talents (3 hrs) Includes learning and behavioral characteristics of children with disabilities, gifts, and talents. Law influencing special education and Georgia's guidelines for identification and alternative educational programs for exceptional children. Field experience required.

Course work in Gifted Education:

These courses must be completed through Columbus State University if the student expects the institution to recommend for certification.
 

SPED 6285

Program Development and Curriculum for Gifted Learners (4 hrs)

Prerequisite:

Admission to Teacher Education or Departmental approval. Surveys all current successful strategies and programs being used to implement instruction to children and youth who are gifted. Field experience required.
 

SPED 6288

Learning and Behavioral Characteristics of Gifted Learners (4 hrs)

Prerequisite:

Admission to Teacher Educational or Department approval. Surveys definition, characteristics, and identification of the gifted. Examines the effects of cultural diversity with an eye toward the provision of appropriate services to gifted children and youth who are traditionally undeserved, disadvantaged, or disabled. Field experience required.
 

SPED 6289

Teaching the Gifted Learner (4 hrs) Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education or Department approval. Administrative and instructional intervention for gifted learners. Ability grouping, inclusion, enrichment, special classes, acceleration.
